Philipp's Experience – Coding, Community, and Confidence

Studying abroad is about more than just academics—it's about stepping into a new world of opportunities, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. For Philipp Kathofer, UCSB's International Programs offered exactly that: a mix of studying, exploring, making friends, and, yes, even navigating some bureaucracy.
Coming from Germany, Philipp found many aspects of life at UCSB familiar, but the university system had some differences. "I just had to read the syllabus or ask the professors and TAs," he said. A simple adjustment, but one that made a big impact in feeling comfortable in a new academic environment.
Beyond the classroom, Philipp immersed himself in the vibrant UCSB community through university-organized events. "Movie nights, free food events, and student association activities helped me feel more connected," he shared. These moments, filled with laughter and new friendships, made UCSB feel like home.
Perhaps the biggest transformation came in his confidence with English. "I'm much more comfortable communicating now," he noted. And while academics were a key part of his journey, the real game-changer was his participation in two coding competitions—something that isn't common in Germany. "These experiences, along with the unique classes I took, will definitely help me in my future career."
For Philipp, UCSB was more than just a university—it was a launching pad for personal and professional growth.
