South Coast Science Project (SCSP) Science Summer Institute

The SCSP offers a week-long (40 hour) Institute for elementary (TK-6th) teachers during the first week of August each year at local school. The content of the Institute is on a six-year rotation cycle (physics, chemistry and engineering, earth science, environmental science, life science [molecules, organisms, and ecosystems], and life science [evolution and heredity]). During the Institute, teachers learn science content and engage in NGSS aligned three-dimensional activities that can be taken back to their classroom. For Institute specifics see the SCSP website (scsp.chem.ucsb.edu). In addition to signing up for the course on the PACE website, you also must register for the Institute on the SCSP site.

For Summer 2024, the focus is on Earth Science

Certified elementary teachers will participate in activities to help them learn earth science as well as gain a deeper appreciation of the scientific practices and cross cutting ideas as laid out by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). In addition, teachers will work through activities that they can take back and use with their students in their classroom. All activities will be aligned with NGSS disciplinary core ideas ESS1 (Earth’s Place in the Universe) and ESS2 (Earth Systems).
