What does it mean to truly challenge yourself? For Barbara Wilhelm, studying at UCSB was more than just an academic experience—it was a daily adventure, pushing her beyond her comfort zone in the best possible way.

"Every day felt like stepping outside my comfort zone and discovering something new about myself and how I connect with others," she shared. From the very start, UCSB was more than just a school—it became a place of transformation.

One of the biggest cultural surprises for Barbara was the openness and casual friendliness of American culture. "At first, it caught me off guard, but I quickly learned to embrace it. I started initiating conversations without overthinking and balancing my own cultural identity with new ways of thinking."

A pivotal part of her experience was joining Women in Business (WIB) at UCSB. "It was one of the most rewarding parts of my time here. I connected with American students, learned from professionals, and built friendships that made UCSB feel like home."

Living and studying in a new country reshaped Barbara’s perspective. "I've learned that adaptability isn't just a skill—it's a mindset. I've become more independent, resilient, and open to possibilities I never considered before."

Academically, her courses were invaluable, not just for the knowledge gained but for the practical skills that will shape her career. "Beyond problem-solving and teamwork, I’ve learned how to communicate across cultures and handle uncertainty with confidence. These experiences have given me a global mindset that will be invaluable no matter where I go next."
